Top Laser Sights for Shotguns

As with most any defensive firearm, a laser sight or weapon light with laser combo is an excellent force multiplier - though it doesn't eliminate the need for good training and a solid grasp of the fundamentals.

Laser Sights

The benefits of a weapon mounted laser sight are consistent whether we're talking about an AR 15 laser or one for a short barrel shotgun, though application and tactics will likely differ. Care should be taken to select the right Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation device (if you want to get technical about it) and care taken to compare the relative advantages of a dedicated laser (with an accompanying WML) vs. those of a light-laser combo.

There are two types of devices in this list. Some are detachable, i.e. the ones that mount to a Picatinny or Weaver rail, and others are integral and more or less permanent (certainly more so than any rail-mounted laser).

Within those constraints (and within these two groups), here are the top Crimson Trace® laser sights for shotguns.

Rail Master® and Rail Master® Pro

The Crimson Trace Rail Master® and Crimson Trace Rail Master® Pro series is an outstanding choice of shotgun laser for a home defense shotgun (and for other applications too). Built for use on rail-equipped rifle and pistols as well as the tactical shotgun, the CMR-201 and its cousins are powerful and versatile. They can be attached and zeroed to virtually any shotgun equipped with M1913 Picatinny or Weaver-style accessory rail and later moved as needed to a different long gun or to a suitable handgun (in the latter case with a minimum of 1/16 in. distance from the recoil lug). There are currently four (4) models of CMR to choose from, all utilizing Crimson Trace's Secure-Lock Technology™ to prevent movement from recoil or handling once locked on.

1. CMR-201 Rail Master ULS (Universal Laser Sight)

The CMR-201 is the "OG" Rail Master laser sight. It features a 5mW red laser with a variety of inserts to adapt to different platforms and runs for over four (4) hours on a single 1/3N Lithium battery. Instant Activation™ is achieved by simply "tapping on" and "tapping off" from either side with the ambidextrous activation control tabs, producing an approximately .5 in. (1/2") wide diameter visible beam at fifty (50) feet. For further information, read the CMR-201 Owner's Handbook.

2. CMR-201 CTAN Rail Master ULS ("Coyote Brown")

The CMR-201 CTAN rail-mounted weapon laser boasts all the features of the CMR-201, but in with a tan color that doubles as a protective coating.   Perhaps you prefer a color with less environmental contrast. Maybe your desert-coated M1014 needs matching fighting accessories, or you just want everything in your safe to be AR 670-1 compliant. Whatever the reason, the Rail Master CTAN has you covered.  If you'd like to know more, read some of the laser sight reviews on the CMR-201 CTAN page.

3. CMR-206 Rail Master Universal Green Laser Sight

If your preferred long gun features a pic-rail or Weaver accessory rail, it deserves the ambidextrous CMR-206 as well. To allow the user latitude for mission and personal preference, this  green laser sight offers three modes of operation: Momentary, Strobe, and Constant-On. At 5mW peak and 515nm, the Class 3R CMR-206 is the brightest green laser allowed by law. Run time on a single 1/3N Lithium battery is 2 hours of constant use, and there's an automatic 5-minute shut-off feature to conserve power. You can learn more in the CMR-206 laser sight entry on the Crimson Trace website.

Laser + Light Combo

A Crimson Laser Light Combo is the visible laser and WML (Weapon Mounted Light) for discriminating users who prefer or require a dual purpose device. Shotgun laser and weapon light in one compact package,

The lights on a combination device will not deliver as many lumens as a dedicated weapon mounted light, but the light-laser Rail Master Pro has the advantage of being a single piece that can be moved from one weapon platform to another as mission or preference dictates. It has the additional advantage of being (typically) less expensive than buying both a laser sight and a separate, stand-alone light pushing a greater number of lumens.

Crimson Trace Rail Master Pro

1. CMR-204 Rail Master Pro Universal Green Laser Sight & Tactical Light

The CMR-204 is a universal green laser sight and white light combo for rail-equipped shotguns (and of course similarly accoutered rifles and pistols). Augmenting the green laser on this device is a 100 lumen white light for PID (Positive Identification) of targets. It operates in four modes: laser/light constant on, laser constant on, light constant on, and laser with light dazzler. It features "Tap On/Tap Off" controls for instant activation and a programmed automatic shut-off after five minute to conserve battery life. You can see full technical spec online in the Crimson Trace laser sight line-up.

2. CMR-205 Rail Master Pro Universal Red Laser Sight & Tactical Light

The CMR-205 is largely similar to the 204, but its 5mW laser is in Terminator Red. Like other Crimson Trace lasers, it has been factory sighted at 50, and like the 204 is powered by a single RC2 Lithium battery. Light output is 100 Lumens of LED white light, with a laser dot size of about half an inch at fifty feet. Learn more on the CMR-205 page or in the owner's manual.

For the Mossberg 590 Shockwave

Possibly the most popular of all Mossberg Shockwave accessories currently available, the Crimson Trace Lasersaddle seems to have shown up in every Mossberg Shockwave review we've seen. Note that the Laser Saddle is not for every short barrel or pistol grip shotgun; these models are specifically for Mossberg shotguns (the 500 and 590 specifically), and they are not limited to those with a pistol grip...meaning you can use one on a regular stock Mossberg 590 if that's what you're using!

Lasersaddles are simple to install and are designed for ease of use by both right-handed and left-handed shooters, and batteries can be switched out without removing the sight from the weapon...so no worries about losing zero during a battery change!

Crimson Trace Laser Saddle

1. LS-250G Lasersaddle Green Laser Sight

The LS-250G is made for Mossberg 500, Mossberg 590, and Mossberg 12 gauge shotguns. Its designed to attach seamlessly to a properly drilled and tapped receiver, providing multiple (ambi) laser activation pad points for its 5mW green laser. There's a master on/off switch for completely powering down the system for transport or travel, plenty of room left up to acquire rifle or bead sights as needed, and sufficient real estate for the addition of a dedicated rail-mounted weapon light like the CWL-102 for target identification or navigation in a darkened threat area.  The LS-250G will not fit a 20 gauge or .410 bore weapon.

2. LS-250 Lasersaddle Red Laser Sight

Also designed for the Mossberg 500 and 590 line of shotguns (including the Shockwave), the LS-250 is a fixed red laser that settles over the top of a drilled and tapped receiver. The LS-250 burns on two #2032 batteries, powering a brilliant red laser that has been factory sighted at fifty feet. Like its cousins, this model of shotgun laser sight is user adjustable for windage and elevation. Depending on its intended deployment, a savvy user might pair it up with the waterproof, 900 lumen CWL-202 weapon light.
