How far is the laser visible?
Crimson Trace has the most powerful beam allowed by law, a Class 3R visible light diode. At night, in reduced light, and indoors, the laser is highly visible up to several hundred yards. Under bright sunlight, the dot can be seen up to 15-25 feet away. Lighter-colored surfaces reflect laser light better than darker surfaces. The lighter the surface, the brighter the laser dot will appear.
How long will my batteries last? Where can I get them?
All Crimson Trace products use commonly available powerful, lithium batteries. They provide over four (4) hours of “ON” time for Lasergrips® and Laserguard® models. Batteries for the MVF-515™ line provide a minimum of: six (6) hours for Green and forty-eight (48) hours for Red of “ON” time.
Turning the master switch “off” will not increase battery life. No power is used until the activation button is depressed. Lightguard™ models provide over two (2) hours of illumination. These batteries are readily available and inexpensive. Required batteries are listed with each product.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY BATTERIES DIE?
When batteries are low, the laser does not just stop working. It fades in intensity and gives plenty of warning. A low battery is indicated by a bright beam when the laser is first activated that begins to slowly fade after several seconds. Most heavy users change their batteries once a year, just to be safe.
ARE CRIMSON TRACE PRODUCTS WEATHERPROOF?
All sights are weatherproof so there’s no risk taking them in the heavy rain or splashing them. Submerging them in water, while not recommended, will not destroy the laser sight. If they are submerged, take them off, remove the batteries and allow to air dry.
MY LASER DOT IS NO LONGER ROUND – ITS SPECKLED AND SPREAD OUT, WHAT DO I DO?
It sounds as though you may have a dirty lens. If your dot looks like the image on the left all you need to do is clean your lens. Residue from gun oil or ammunition can get into the diode housing when your firearm is discharged. The particles aerosolize and adhere to the lens causing a “speckled” or “spreading of the beam” appearance.
To clean your lens please follow these steps:
1. Put a drop or two of Windex or Isopropyl Alcohol on one of the cleaning swabs that were included in your accessory packet
2. Insert the damp swab into the diode housing and twist several times
3. Remove the damp swab and insert the dry swab and twist it several times
4. Continue alternating between the damp and dry swab until the lens is clean and the dot is back to its original shape.
Don’t get discouraged, it may take several times of alternating between the damp and dry swabs before you clean the lens completely.
HOW DO I SIGHT THEM IN?
Crimson Trace laser sights are factory-sighted to approximate point-of-impact at 50-feet. Unlike most other laser sights, you can adjust them if needed by turning the tiny windage (side) and elevation (top) screws with the small hex wrenches provided with your Lasergrips. A good starting point is to establish your normal sight picture and line up the laser dot with the iron sights — this may be all the adjustment needed. (“Sight picture” simply means evenly aligning the notch in your back sights with the post in your front sight in a level, straight line.)
For further tuning on the range, fire a few rounds at the target. After seeing where the bullets are hitting, you can adjust the laser to the actual point of impact. For example, if the laser is pointing at the center of the target, but the bullets are impacting low and right, move the laser down and to the right.
WHAT IF I DON’T SEE MY GUN LISTED?
We still may have Lasergrips® to fit your gun. Call or email us, we want to hear from you. If we don’t have a model that will fit, requests from people like you help us determine what products to make next. Drop us a note about which guns you’d like to see us outfit.
ARE LASERGRIPS EASILY ADJUSTABLE?
Yes, they can be adjusted for windage and elevation with the included hex wrenches. Lasergrips come pre-sighted from the factory for about 50-feet, which is a good distance to sight-in a handgun. We understand that all guns are slightly different, so we let you fine tune them.
WILL LASERGRIPS FIT MY 1911 PISTOL THAT HAS AN AMBIDEXTROUS SAFETY?
A standard right-side safety lever will interfere with the laser diode housing. You will need to remove your factory right-hand paddle and shorten it slightly to clear. Your local gunsmith can do this quickly and inexpensively. Crimson Trace sells pre-modified Wilson Combat safeties that have the slim “tactical” lever on the left side and a shorter (but wider) paddle on the right side.
Like all aftermarket safeties, these will need to be fitted by a gunsmith. Owners of Kimber 1911 models will need to order a pre-modified safety direct from Kimber and have it fitted by a gunsmith as the Wilson Combat safeties are not compatible with the Kimber design.
CAN I TURN THE LASER OFF COMPLETELY?
Yes. Most Lasergrips® models and select Laserguard® models include a master ON / OFF switch for complete system override. For models without a master ON / OFF switch, top firearms trainers recommend placing a small piece of opaque tape over the diode opening when practicing without the dot. All Lightguard™ models feature a master ON / OFF switch.
WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF THE LASER BEING OFFSET FROM THE BARREL?
Extremely minor. At point blank, the laser is about 1” low and to the right of the barrel’s center line. We recommend sighting in at 50’ so that for any distance between point blank and 50’, the point-of-aim (POA) is within 1” of point-of-impact (POI).
WHAT’S THE WARRANTY?
Every Crimson Trace product is fully warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for three years from the date of purchase. Pro-Custom grip finishes are not warranted for damage due to normal wear and tear.
WHAT DO THE TERMS “RUBBER OVERMOLD” AND “POLYMER” MEAN?
These are two types of molding processes we use to make laser sights. Each set of sights is made out of molded grip substrates into which the electronics are embedded. Polymer grips are molded from a rugged single-density material throughout. Rubber overmold grips are made with a dual-density material, meaning the grip substrates are first molded over the hard polymer.
DO I HAVE TO ALTER MY FIREARM IN ORDER TO INSTALL A LASERGUARD?
No. All Crimson Trace Laserguards are easily installed by the user without the assistance of a gunsmith as no firearm alterations are necessary or suggested. The Laserguard platform attaches to the trigger guard and is held in place by 2 or 3 screws , depending in the model.
WHERE CAN I GET A HOLSTER TO ACCOMMODATE MY LASER SIGHT?
Due to the seamless integration of our laser sights, holsterability is an ease with most common holsters. However, Crimson Trace also teamed up with several trusted names in the holster business to create custom holsters to accommodate your laser equipped pistol. Download our Holster Resource Guide for holster suggestions.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RED LASER AND A GREEN LASER?
A red laser is highly visible in low light. The output peak for both lasers is the same yet the human eye naturally detects the color green, hence the green laser appearing brighter in natural bright day light. Both the green and red laser Crimson Trace produces emit the maximum output allowed by law – a Class 3R laser.
WILL THE LIGHTGUARD WORK WITH MY CURRENT CRIMSON TRACE LASER?
At this time, only the LTG-736 and LTG-760 work in conjunction with existing Crimson Trace laser sights. Due to attachment and activation location, the LTG-746 cannot be used in conjunction with a Crimson Trace laser.
